Located on the scenic waterfront of the Vancouver Convention Center, The CHEST Foundation’s 12th Annual Making a Difference Awards Ceremony and Presentation promises to be a memorable evening. Presentation of the D. Robert McCaffree, MD, Master FCCP Humanitarian Awards will be made. A cocktail hour, from 7:00 pm to 8:00 pm, will be followed by the dinner, program, and awards from 8:00 pm to 10:00 pm.

Making a Difference Society members at the $1,000 annual gift level are eligible for two complimentary tickets, while annual donors at the $500 level are eligible one complimentary ticket. Please contact Teri Ruiz for details about complimentary tickets.

CHEST Challenge Play-offs
CHEST Challenge is a game for fellows-in-training to test their knowledge of pulmonary, critical care, and sleep medicine. All affiliate members of the ACCP were invited to compete online to win free trips to CHEST 2010. The nine top-scoring programs will go head-to-head in a live Jeopardy game-show-style format for a chance to play in the championship match for all the glory and thousands of dollars in cash prizes.

You are invited to join ACCP member volunteers and Ambassadors Group members and give the Lung Lessons^sm Program to elementary students at the Laura Secord Elementary School in Vancouver. This interactive educational event will begin with a training session and breakfast. At 9:30 am, volunteers will travel to the school to present information on the value of lung health, the dangers of smoking, and facts on asthma.

Percussing the Chest in the Era of Homo Technologicus

In this era of technological glut, the bedside exam seems to belong to prehistoric times and is in danger of extinction. While the majority of diagnoses are readily made this way, the skilled bedside exam is a discrete ethnographic ritual which, like all rituals, has undergone transformation. New data suggest that the placebo (and the nocebo) effect depends so much on context, ceremony, ritual, and place and is associated with measurable neurobiological changes. The placebo effect might account for as much as 30% to 40% of any therapeutic effect. Preserving the bedside exam may not only help in practicing cost-effective medicine, it may be the key to the physician-patient bond and to producing the desired therapeutic effect.

During the keynote address, the ACCP will confer select honor and memorial awards and lectures, and The CHEST Foundation will confer the American Lung Association and The CHEST Foundation Asthma Clinical Patient Care Research Award.

CHEST Challenge Championship and Awards Celebration
Cheer for your favorite team during the CHEST Challenge Championship final round. The top three teams will compete to win monetary prizes. Additional awards will be given to abstract presenters, case report presenters, and clinical research award recipients. Plan to attend this exciting evening to watch the teams compete, while challenging your own knowledge. Refreshments will be served.
